Aloha! We area group of citizens trying to convince the City and County of Honolulu to change its lighting plans from something horrible to something great.
Please call your city council member and the mayor and tell them you don’t want the island to be blanketed with horrible blue lighting (4000K lights) and they should simply switch to warmer lighting (2700K). Before it’s too late.
Our efforts are endorsed by the Sierra Club, Oahu Group, and by the Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board.
This is our latest update: Honolulu_lighting_3-1
And a more general explanation of the problem: Honolulu_lighting1
You can read about the problem at Civil Beat.
Our major objections to the lights are:
- They will blanket the island in a blue glow, that is detrimental to human health
- The lights will make it difficult to sleep, as the light will invade our open windows (we live in Hawaii!)
- We will be able to see many fewer stars than before
- The lighting will hinder astronomical observatories on Haleakala and Mauna Kea, making it more difficult to find asteroids near the Earth
